2019 marks the 9th Annual Marquee Fundraising Event for Women’s Resources at the Academy Theatre and another exciting year with exceptional Canadian performer Serena Ryder, who does what she does naturally and effortlessly, and has since she was a young girl. Born in Toronto, raised in Millbrook southeast of Lindsay, she was performing by the age of eight and cut her first record at 16. Her double platinum album, Harmony, featuring Stompa and What I Wouldn’t Do, released in 2012 is really the album where Ryder found her voice and discovered that the best formula for her success is… no formula at all.
Winner of 6 Juno Awards including New Artist of the Year Award in 2008 and Songwriter of the Year and Artist of the Year in 2014, she has had songs placed in over 50 TV shows and commercials. When her album Utopia was released in 2017, she had amassed so much music that whittling it down to fit into album size was a challenge — needless to say there is lots more to come!
Serena doesn’t fit into any particular genre. Her songs encompass it all from jazzy “Got Your Number” to R & B style “Firewater”. Finding her inspiration in stories and energy of others, she has worked with many artists and collaborators in the industry. You are missing out if you haven’t heard Serena sing lately – she’s dynamic and full of feeling. In fact, she says “If you can hear a song and feel ‘that song was written for me’ I want to give that to people….” And you have Serena!
