Fenelon Arts Committee

Established in 2018, the Fenelon Arts Committee (FAC) identifies opportunities for artists, strategizes on arts initiatives, and works to increase public access and engagement with art in the village of Fenelon Falls. The committee is made up of dedicated residents who share a common vision and passion for art and their community.

The FAC invited expressions of interest from artists and/or teams of artists in 2019 to design and install two sculptures in the newly constructed, Rain Garden, located on the south side of The Fenelon Museum property. Two sculptures have been selected for installation; James C. Smith’s Portage and Susan Rankin’s River Grove.

Smith's work Portage, bronze, 46 x 58 x 35 inches, is an homage to the location’s history; a portage and gathering area of First Nations Peoples, the beginning of Fenelon Falls, forestry, logging, and its current use as a recreational space. With 40+ years of artistic experience, Smith’s life-sized bronze canoe paddle figures create a dynamic procession through the park. Susan Rankin has been using the garden as inspiration in her glass work for over 32 years. River Grove, steel, & hand-formed glass, 6-8 ft, is a gathering of 10 glass and steel towers; a nod to the region’s forests and logging past. During winter months, the sculpture will beckon with playful punches of colour in the snowy landscape.
